Ask Chef Amy – spice longevity
Q: It’s time to clean out my spice cupboard for spring and bring in new, fresh spices. How long are spices good for?
Chef: First, I applaud you for cleaning out your spice cabinet. Although spices don’t “go bad” per se, they lose their potency in 6-12 months and really don’t add that “pop” of flavor or brightness to any dish after that point.
If you aren’t sure what’s fresh and what needs to go, do a “smell test!” If you can’t smell it, you won’t be able to taste it, and it has to go!
Make sure to save your jars and bring them into SpiceTopia to be refilled!
